Beginner Results are Best
Results?
Have you ever been in the situation where you were clearly explaining something to someone and you
realized that not much, if any, of what you were explaining was even being heard?
It's not that the other person wasn't being attentive, because they would reply or even cut you off
and try to finish sentences for you. It's just as if what you were saying really didn't matter.
Kinda like they already knew what you were
talking about
The only point of your side of the conversation was the noise that was coming out of your mouth.
Once that noise stopped, the other person you were talking to would respond with little or no regard as to what you
had just said.
Have you ever been the other person? I'll bet you have.
Here's how I know if I've been that other person (yes, I have been the other person, described
above… not listening, finishing sentences, etc. etc.).
During the conversation:
I was waiting for my turn to respond. I was feeling like I had heard this all before. I was waiting
for my turn to 'share my brilliance' or uh at least my knowledge.
Whatever I was doing, I wasn't really listening and trusting that the information coming from the
other person was truly useful, helpful and worth my time.
Something in me was telling me that I knew
whatever it was they were trying to share with me too well to devote my time to actually listening
closely.
Here's the opposite of the above described scenario:
Let's say you've been hearing about something that has you a little, if not more, intrigued. Like,
you heard that there's going to be a craft show or home making show coming to your town soon.
Not interesting enough??? Well, maybe your favorite writer or speaker is supposedly headed to a
town near you.
Still no interesting enough??? Ok… You heard that Aerosmith is coming to town. Is that exciting
enough???
Whatever it is, you are ready for the
information. You are more than ready, you are waiting, salivating and ready to absorb it and retain
it.
It's info that you know you do not have and you really want. Once you get it, you will devour it,
retain it and most definitely use it to it's fullest.
That's why often times, when it comes to getting fit, beginner results are the best results.
No assumptions. No, "Oh, I already know that" or "I know what I SHOULD be doing". "I already know
how many calories I should be eating". "I know what exercises to be doing and how long I should be exercising"… "I
know how I should be doing my cardio"… the list goes on and on.
The absolute beginner waits attentively, listening to every word, reading carefully the information
before them and thinking about how they can retain it and apply it to their lives and their new fitness
endeavor.
The information actually gets in there… because
there is nothing in it's way. No "I already know that" walls to climb or go around. Just an empty space, waiting to
be filled.
The greatest part about what we know (or think we know) and our amazing minds, is that we actually
have the ability to create this "beginner's mind" anytime we like. All we have to do is wipe the slate clean, open
up our ears and listen closely to the information that is in front of us. No assumptions, just attentive,
appreciative (maybe even excited…), listening.
Here's some common assumptions that I see getting in the way of some really great fitness
results:
-
I must count my calories in order to successfully lose weight and body fat.
-
I have to exercise every day.
-
I have to spend at least and hour at the gym.
-
I can't eat fat and still be really fit and trim and lean.
-
Weight training is for muscle heads and bodybuilders.
-
Cardio only works if you are doing long sessions at least 30 minutes or longer.
Yep, you guessed it… None of the above are true. I can't tell you the amount of times I've
explained it, only for my explanation not to get past the "I already know what to do" barriers.
And yet, so many people continue to get little
or no results from the info they 'think' they already know.
Don't let that be you. Get excited, because the amazing fitness results you want are yours, and the
information you are looking for, is right next to you.
Open yourself up and absorb it.
Here's a challenge for you:
Shoot me an email with your fitness question (even if it's one you think you already know) and wait
for my reply. See if YOU can really hear the answer.
Are you a member of Fitforeverinforty.com??? If you are, you can post your question in the forum at
theFit Spa.
By the way, there are no silly questions when it comes to your health and fitness, so don't be
afraid, just fire away. I look forward to hearing from you.
